Museum of the History of Moscow

The Museum of the History of Moscow first opened its doors in 1896, making it one of the oldest museums in the Russian capital. Its collections depict life in the city throughout its history, from Moscow's ancient beginnings to the present day. The museum boasts an impressive collection of archeological findings and numerous paintings and examples of period crockery, furniture, oil lamps, books, clothing and stamps.
Of particular note are a series of drawings of medieval Moscow by the historical painter Apollinarius Vasnetsov and numerous very authentic reconstructions of medieval peasant dwellings and workshops. The museum is housed in the impressive pillared and green cupola-ed building of the former Church of St. John the Theologian under the Elm, where it was moved in 1987. The museum's collection extends to exhibitions in The Old English Yard at Ulitsa Varvarka 4a (Metro Kropotkinskaya), formerly a 15th century English merchant's house and later the English Embassy, the Moscow Archeological Museum at Manezhnaya Ploshad 1 (Metro Okhotny Ryad) and the Museum of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior at Ulitsa Vokhonka 15 (Metro Kropotkinskaya).
