Museum of Oriental Art

The museum houses a truly impressive collection of Central Asian, South-East Asian and Caucasian art from the 1st century AD through to the beginning of the 20th century. Artistic works and artifacts from Korea, Mongolia, Turkey, Tibet, China, Iran, India and Japan are all represented. Among the museum's most prized exhibits are a set of Indonesian shadow-puppets, an excellent collection of Caucasian rugs and some impressive Samurai swords. The museum hosts regular temporary exhibitions and boasts a permanent collection of artistic works by the prolific Roerich family, whose expeditions frequently took them into the plains and mountains of Central Asia.
More information on Roerich and his stunning canvasses depicting the dramatic peaks of the Himalayas can be found in the Roerich Museum section of our website. The museum's pale yellow, Corinthian-pillared host building is almost as impressive as the museum's collection itself.
